If you have multiple outdoor plants nothing is more fun than lugging water to your plants every day.
With a automated system you will never have to do this, as it’s all done automatically.
Careful consideration must be taken to use the proper emitters. There are several different types that deliver varying amounts of water set to your choosing.
With a automatic system teamed with the proper emitter you have full control how much water each plant is receiving. Generally all plants receive the exact same amounts of water.
There are generally two types of admitters.
- Drip Irrigation
- Spray Admitters
Selecting the right admitter is important to limit over watering and under watering.
It is crucial to use a pressure regulator typically they range from 20-25psi which is ideal for drip or spray irrigation systems.
Make sure the pressure regulator has a flitter or removeable flitter included with it. Otherwise, emitters will become clogged with no water output causing the plants to wither and possibly Hermie or die.
Drip emitters come in multiple flow rates.
There’s pro’s and con’s to using both.
Drip Irrigation
Con’s
Prone to clogging even with a water flitter especially the cheap admitters that can be purchased online. You get what you pay for.
Pro’s
Slow precise water delivery with no over watering, no over spray and as a bonus very low water usage.
Spray Admitters
Con’s
Significantly more water usage.
Pressure fluctuation can cause over watering or under watering.
They have to be adjusted constantly to prevent over watering.
Most spray admitters will have to be adjusted constantly with out the use of Teflon tape.
One of the con’s if you have multiple emitters, it will decrease the water pressure and if you increase the water pressure you have to make sure all of them are set to the right pressure for each plant.
Pro’s
Once configured properly water delivery can be precise.
Delivers a 360 degree spray pattern to reach all of the top soil.
With both systems stakes will be need to be used to prevent movement and drip stakes are recommended for drip emitters.

Both types of emitters use ¼ inch tubing.
